The agency, founded by Darren Evans in 2001, works within the creative industries in both the private and public sectors.
Over more than two decades, The Engine Room has built a strong reputation for bridging the worlds of design and business.
The agency has supported a wide range of clients, from innovative health technology businesses and manufacturers to national public sector programmes delivered in collaboration with organisations such as the Design Council.
Judges were particularly impressed by the demonstrable impact of The Engine Room’s work, including award-winning projects recognised through multiple prestigious Design Effectiveness Awards, including Gold and Grand Prix honours.
The panel also highlighted The Engine Room’s exceptional contribution to the region.
Managing Director Darren Evans is a long-standing advocate for creative talent in Kirklees and a co-founder of Wilson’s Republic, a community interest company supporting the growth of the local creative sector.
Through conferences, events, mentoring, work placements and paid internships, The Engine Room has played a key role in nurturing creative talent, supporting businesses and promoting the economic and cultural value of the creative industries in the region.
The judges were further impressed by the company’s strong organisational culture and people-focused approach.
With a close-knit team supported by trusted local freelancers, The Engine Room places a strong emphasis on professional development, coaching and mentoring and creating a positive and inclusive working environment.
Its long-standing commitment to staff wellbeing, hybrid working and collaborative culture was recognised as a key factor in its continued success.
Phil Clarke, partner at Eaton Smith and chair of the judging panel, said: “The Engine Room is a standout example of how creative businesses can deliver real commercial and societal impact.
“Their strategic approach, award-winning work and unwavering commitment to supporting creative talent in our region make them a very deserving winner of this award.”
Darren said: “We are delighted that the judges have recognised the hard work and dedication of the team at The Engine Room.
“As we enter our 25th year in business in 2026, receiving this award is particularly meaningful and a fitting way to mark this milestone.”
As the Business of the Month winner, The Engine Room will now be considered for Eaton Smith’s prestigious Business of the Year Award, which recognises outstanding businesses across the region.
