Kirkwood open new superstore and dedicated kids shop in Mirfield

Hospice charity The Kirkwood is opening two new shops in Mirfield town centre, with a major new superstore launching today (29th May) and a dedicated children’s shop set to follow next week.

The superstore opens its doors on Friday, bringing together the charity’s existing Mirfield furniture and clothing shops under one roof.

The current Mirfield furniture store has been reimagined as a spacious, open-plan retail space, with the ground floor transformed into a bright shop floor offering a wide range of clothing that will change with the seasons.

The existing clothing shop is being absorbed into the new site, creating a much larger and more varied retail offer in a single location.

Upstairs, the store will continue to stock furniture, bric-a-brac and larger household items.

The new superstore will also act as a central donation hub for the Mirfield area, supplementing The Kirkwood’s existing Sands Mill donation centre on Wakefield Road.

Supporters will be able to drop off pre-loved items more easily, helping the charity continue its sustainability work while raising funds for patient care.

Paul Freethy, the charity’s Associate Director of Retail, said: “This is a really exciting development for The Kirkwood and for Mirfield.

“By bringing our two existing shops together, we’re creating a much bigger and better retail space that offers something for everyone. It allows us to showcase more stock, provide a better shopping experience, and ultimately generate more income to support the patients and families we care for.”

Freethy added that retail currently funds care for around one in ten of the people The Kirkwood supports.

A new dedicated kids’ shop will then open on Tuesday 2 June, taking over the unit currently occupied by the small Mirfield clothing shop.

The premises will undergo a full transformation and rebrand, with the space designed to be bright, engaging and family-friendly.

It will stock a wide selection of toys, games, books and clothing for children of all ages, all sourced from donations.

The children’s shop is a first for The Kirkwood and reflects both customer demand and the quality of donations the charity receives.

Freethy added: “We’re always looking for new and innovative ways to grow our retail offering, and this is something completely different for us.”

“This shop will be a fun, vibrant space for families to visit, and it’s a great example of how we’re evolving our retail portfolio to meet the needs of our communities while raising vital funds for our care.”

Every purchase made at the new shops will go towards The Kirkwood’s specialist care for people living with life-limiting illnesses, and their families, across Kirklees.

An official opening event for the superstore is set to be announced in due course.
