Former England and Super League player Shaun Lunt is putting on a series of summer holiday camps for local children this year through a new Community Interest Company.
The camps will run from Monday 21 July through to Wednesday 20 August at Moorlands Cricket Club, with daily sessions from 10am to 2pm.
Aimed at children aged 8 to 12, the days will include a mix of sports coaching and team games.
Places are priced at £20 per day, but any child eligible for free school meals can attend completely free of charge.
Lunt has called Mirfield home for the last 15 years and is heavily involved in the local rugby league community, which has led to the creation of AthltHQ CIC.
He currently coaches the Under-11s at Mirfield ARLFC and previously took charge of the club’s men’s first team. He is also a coach with Leeds Rhinos academy and both of his sons play their rugby league locally.
His professional career took him to the Super League with Huddersfield Giants among others, and he went on to earn international honours representing England.
The idea behind the camps is a simple one – to give children something active and sociable to do over the summer break, while giving parents a bit of breathing space during what can be a long and expensive stretch of the year.
Shaun, founder of AthltHQ CIC, said: “The summer holidays are great for the kids, but as a parent myself I know six weeks can feel like a long time to fill.
“We wanted to put something on that gives them a proper day of sport, activity and fun, and gives mum and dad a bit of a breather at the same time.
“Making it accessible was a big priority for me. Any child on free school meals can come along completely free of charge – nobody should miss out because of cost.
“Mirfield has been home for me and my family for 15 years. Being able to put something on for local kids in the town where I coach and where my own boys play their rugby means a lot.”
