Drivers in Mirfield and across Kirklees have been left puzzled by the introduction of new parking charges at 15 previously free council car parks – including Mirfield’s Station Road car park.
The new system allows up to two hours of free parking, but only if drivers correctly navigate the RingGo parking app or phone system.
Mistakes could lead to unexpected charges, and concerns have been raised that those unfamiliar with the technology may struggle.
Following numerous questions and complaints, Kirklees Council has issued a simplified guide to help motorists understand how to claim their free parking and avoid unnecessary fees.
At car parks with ticket machines, drivers can simply take a ticket and display it in their car.
However, at locations without machines – including Mirfield Station Road – motorists must register their stay via the RingGo app or by calling the automated payline.
No payment is required for the first two hours, but users need to ensure they complete the process correctly.
Kirklees Council has confirmed that regular enforcement will take place at these car parks, with civil enforcement officers checking for valid parking sessions.
Drivers failing to register their stay or overstaying their paid period could receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).
The changes have sparked concerns, particularly for older drivers and those without smartphones.
While the council states that parking can be registered by phone, some residents feel the system is overly complicated compared to traditional ticket machines.
The new charges affect car parks in Holmfirth, Meltham, Slaithwaite, Marsden, and other areas across Kirklees. In Mirfield, the Station Road car park is the only one affected by the new rules.
For more information on how to use RingGo and avoid unexpected charges, visit the Kirklees Council website or check signage at the car parks.
